A New Thing: Dinner Church

Aldersgate has big news.

One year ago, our church discovered that plans for the Durham-Orange light rail will have the elevated rail running so close to our building that it will literally destroy some of the front steps. After trying and failing to get the proposed rail path moved, Aldersgate began to talk in earnest about what light rail construction in three years would mean for our small church. After much prayer, many meetings, Christian conversation, and the blessing of the appropriate denominational authorities, a church conference was held at Aldersgate on June 26, 2017, at which a three-quarter majority of present, voting members decided to place Aldersgate’s property on the market for sale.
St. Thomas More Catholic Church, our next-door-neighbor, made Aldersgate an offer, and on Aug. 16, 2017, Aldersgate accepted that offer.  Closing was Jan. 24, 2018.
However…this is not the end!
On Jan. 28, 2018, Aldersgate became a “dinner church,” combining worship, dinner, and Eucharist on Sundays at 4 p.m. at the Event Center of Extraordinary Ventures, 200 S. Elliott Rd. in Chapel Hill - http://www.extraordinaryventures.org/ . Since we relocated, 100 percent of our Sunday offerings benefit charities and benevolences. We selected Table Inc., a Chapel Hill organization that feeds hungry children, as the recipient of our February offerings -- https://www.tablenc.org.
You may be puzzled…. Dinner and church together? You mean at the same time? – Yes. What’s that going to be like? – Come and see.  We think you will be pleased, and dinner is on us. Worship is informal, and dress is casual.
A few more things to note:
Written into the contract to purchase is the assurance that St. Thomas More will keep Aldersgate’s Memorial Garden in perpetuity, providing access to those who wish to visit.
The Aldersgate Church Preschool found a new home at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Chapel Hill.
We will have a post office box for mail: P.O. Box 3296, Chapel Hill, NC 27515. You may reach Rev. Cheryl Lawrence at cherylml@nccumc.org. The church’s e-mail address is: aldersgatechapelhill@gmail.com

Soup and Chili Time

Sunday, Dec. 17, 4 pm
Worship, pray, discuss: February offerings
Extraordinary Ventures, 200 S. Elliott Rd., Chapel Hill

We’ll enjoy hot soup/chili, fresh bread, and desserts as we prayerfully discuss at our individual tables: Who will receive Aldersgate’s February offerings? Offerings over the course of a month often amount to several thousand dollars. We'll meet in the Franklin Room of Extraordinary Ventures event center, 200 S. Elliott Rd., in Chapel Hill.
Each table will bring to the larger group its recommendation for a worthy organization to receive our February offerings.  We’ll reach a congregational decision for one organization after hearing from the tables.
Aldersgate plans to relocate in late January to the event center of Extraordinary Ventures, to become a dinner church who meets at 4 p.m. After that time, 100 percent of our Sunday offerings will benefit worthy organizations.
All are welcome all the time, and we mean that.

Happy Advent!

Thank you for your generosity!

Ann, Janice, and Wendy deliver gifts to HomeStart
Thank you, Aldersgate, for the generous way you have responded to local needs during December and January. On Tuesday of this week, Ann, Janice, Wendy, and Pastor Cheryl delivered bags and bags of wrapped gifts to HomeStart, the Chapel Hill shelter for women and children, to start a new gift closet for non-Christmas gifts. We also gave the shelter a check for $405, collected on Christmas Eve. The T-shirts in the photo are for A Lotta Love, a local company that donates time, money, and creativity to create colorful, welcoming decor in the bedrooms at HomeStart. See -- http://www.alottalove.org/.

Yesterday, Pastor Cheryl also gave two checks from Aldersgate to the social worker at Glenwood Elementary to help two immigrant families (with children at Glenwood) keep their homes. These parents are seeking asylum, want to work, but do not yet have work permits. Each family had about $600 applied to their rents. The families, the school, and the social workers at Glenwood Elementary wish to express their gratitude to Aldersgate.

Thanks, Aldersgate. The church's generosity is heart-warming on these cold winter days.
